The Social Relief System of St. Gregory the Great: 540–604
Abstract
Each chapter of the history of mankind contains accounts of the suffering of the poor and the needy. Hunger, thirst, lack of shelter, lack of care for the physically and mentally ill, special care for dependent children and the aged, inhuman treatment of the criminal, the practice of slavery are just some of the conditions that exist from one era to another. But history also contains some accounts of the ways, the relief systems that were used to remedy these conditions and of the great leaders who sponsored and lead the way to better social conditions. Let us first take a general look at some of the ways in which conditions were improved before the time of Gregory the Great.
