Influence of European Education on Early Nineteenth Century Education in America

Mary James O'Brien, Fordham University

Abstract

There are many points of divergence between the eighteenth century and the nineteenth century educational systems. This change was connected with the agitation of mind brought on by the French Revolution and the growth of Napoleon's power. The Revolution had destroyed the historical foundations of society, and Napoleon's successors had unbalanced the political status of Europe. The early nineteenth century realized that the national spirit is a priceless inheritance and that the Church is the foundation for reconstructing society. Hence the leaders of the new age went beyond the Age of Enlightenment to the Middle Ages, in which era Christian idealism and Germanic spirit had achieved their greatest triumphs.
