The South Raises Its Head
Abstract
The South has again taken arms, this time not to prove that its state rights award it justification for secession, but to march North nevertheless its universities for generals, its young writers for warriors, its books guns to confound a critic.A close examination of publishers' catalogues for the past six or seven years reveals that an enormous energy is grinding into being in that district which lies below the Potomac, and that the literary citadels of the remainder of the country, unwary for some time of any challenge, had best issue a call to the colors.
