Child Care in Four Catholic Institutions in Manhattan and Brooklyn, 1817-1947: The Effect of Changing Concepts as Seen in Four Fordham Dissertations

Anne Marie Buckley, Fordham University

Abstract

"The evolution of professional social service with its emphasis on the individualization of the child played no small part in the tenuous position of the Institution". Up to the beginning of the twentieth century, the Institution had been the main method of care for neglected and dependent children. Within twenty years, however, public and professional opinion had swung to the other extreme and the value of the Institution was sincerely doubted. There was a great emphasis on placing these children in foster homes where it was felt that they would be able to experience the closest thing to living in their own homes.
