Catholic Concept of Education

Berenice Greenwell, Fordham University

Abstract

It is self-evident that he who would employ means to reach an end must know the nature of the end before he can determine the kind of means to be employed. Now, the Catholic Church, the great Mother of humanity, understands at once the nature and destiny of man, and, hence, can determine the means which will enable him to fulfill that destiny. Though she is herself the supreme means, she uses many subordinate instruments of which education may be regarded as the chief. However, knowing the nature of man and his end, the Church must determine the nature of this education.
