Abstract

The Diocese of Sacramento comprises 53,400 square miles of territory in the northern and northwestern portion of the state of California with a Catholic population of approximately 45,000 souls. Forty-nine parishes with their outlying mission churches, attended by seventy-eight priests provide for the spiritual needs of this immense territory, the area of which is equal to that of the states of New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey and Maryland combined. Nor is the population homogeneous in character. Italian, Portuguese, Croatian and Mexican immigrants have contributed their share in the upbuilding of the church side by side with the descendants of the sturdy pioneers and earlier immigrants from Ireland and Germany. Scattered over this territory are thirteen elementary parochial schools with an enrollment of 2,282 children, taught by 73 religious of seven different religious communities. In addition there is a boys’ high school caring for 180 boys, and four girls’ high schools with a total enrollment of 420.
