The Principles of Modern Penology

Philip H Burkett, Fordham University

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to subject the principles of modern penology to a critical examination. In criminal procedure we distinguish the following stages: detection, arrest, trial, acquittal or conviction. Penology deals with the criminal after conviction. It is thus distinguished from criminology, an allied branch of sociology, which studies the causes of crime with the corresponding remédies.
