The California Youth Authority: A Pioneer Program for the Rehabilitation of Juvenile Delinquents, 1941 to 1964
Abstract
In recent years the American public has been greatly concerned with the problems of its young people in general and with juvenile delinquency in particular. All of the mass media of communication have discussed that in our country for the past several decades, the pattern of life has become more complex. Simple values, inherited standards have been set aside by many, and the will-o-the wisp of material pleasures has become the axis on which life turns. The cult of the casual easy way is the new faith and sensuality is its doctrine. Amid this enervating and devastating process, the young are expected to stand as the future hope of the country. The sad truth is, however, that proper fundamental training of our young people has been neglected in the adults search for pleasure and material comfort. Something more solid, more basic is needed to help the youngsters attain the stature and responsibility of maturity.
