The Renaissance and the Reformation
Abstract
No sudden change takes place in the history of a people. Slowly but surely the slumbering fire of discontent and unrest gathers strength and then bursts forth. Having found an outlet, it soon spreads and the world witnesses a conflagration that many waters cannot extinguish. When it has spent itself and meets only charred remains to check its course, only then does it fury abate, only then does it burn itself out. What a sad scene of desolation and havoc, wrought by its devastating force, remains as a witness of its violence!
