State Rights in Education

Francis Xavier Rom, Fordham University

Abstract

The record of government activities during the past few years is filled to overflowing with legislation, proposed or actually determined upon, regarding the educational problem. While the situation has been acute in certain portions of the country, and called for concerted action on the part of the inhabitants to preserve their rights in the face of an opposing minority, yet the movement is by no means restricted to an insignificant area. In fact, we are once again face to face with the determined plan, abandoned a few years back, but now embraced with renewed vigor by its champions, to widen enormously the sphere of government activity and control in the field of education. The tendency to increase the activities of the government in this matter points to a misconception of the duties and rights of the State.
