Children's Court of Oneida County, New York A Historical Study and Survey With Emphasis on the Probation Department and the Detention Home

Isabelle Ann Angelini, Fordham University

Abstract

"There but for the grace of 1 God, go I.” This is a thought which has often come to the mind of the writer as she has watched the juvenile offenders come and go out of the judges' chambers. Some wore smiles on their faces, some looked defiant; others were crying; and then again others were expressionless and seemingly devoid of feeling.Such scenes are common in a children's court. Yet, were it not for the fact that New York State was among the first states to separate the children from the adult offenders, they could have been coming out of a criminal court; and, more often than not handcuffed to a police officer.
