The Necessity of Religion as a Basis in Education

T. F Morrissey, Fordham University

Abstract

Since the reformation there has been a marked tendency to secularize education. Things have to-day gone so far that religion has been almost completely ostracized from the educational syllabus of the so called civilized nations. In some one or two countries in Europe religious instruction has been provided for outside the curriculum. None acknowledge religion itself to have any right to appear as a subject worthy of consideration in the daily work of schools. Here and there University Courses may be found on comparative religion. But so far as positive religious training is concerned its entire absence seems to be a necessary qualification of the modern State University. Outside of Catholic Schools, Colleges and Universities there seems to be no positive training at all in religion.
