De Natura Rerum of the Venerable Bede

M. Aquinas Gude, Fordham University

Abstract

The Venerable Bede was born in 673 in the vicinity of Durham, probably in the village of Jarrow near the month of the Tyne. He was born when Egfrid was king of Northumberland, which was still an independent kingdom at this time. We know nothing of Bede's parents except that, when Bede was seven years old, they placed him under the care of the Abbot Benedict Biscop. Much of Bede's subsequent greatness was due to the care of this enlightened monk.St. Benedict Biscop was a monk of Lindisfarne, a man of extraordinary piety and intelligence. By his travels through France and Italy, he was able to learn the best features of monastic observance and so to become, in every way, capable of founding an ideal Benedictine monastery.
