Community Mental Health Planning at the Case Level: Case Studies on Target Areas

Harold Siegelbaum, Fordham University

Abstract

Purpose of Study - This descriptive study of a forty-five case sample of drug and alcohol outpatients at D.C.M.H. was undertaken as an adjunct to a pilot study of 100 such cases which constitutes the first group of patients for whom systematic follow-up data related to out- come was available. This study confined itself to an attempt to humanize the statistical data collected in the pilot study relating to the nine life-space or adaptational target areas in each case. It was decided that such an evaluation would deal with the nature of declaring goals in these areas, the intervention process and the meaning of attainment or non-attainment of goals. There would also be some exploration of interventional options available to meet the problem and of the implicit criteria used to designate attainment or non-attainment of target-area goals.
