M. Bernice McCourt, Fordham University

Abstract

The Renaissance which began in the fourteenth century was a very comprehensive movement embracing the various activities of man in the realms of literature, art, science, etc., but we shall restrict ourselves to just one phase of this great movement, namely, that pertaining to Education. That period of history beginning with the fourteenth century is characterized by a peculiar mental attitude of the people. At the time a revolution of tremendous import took place in the realm of thought throughout the whole of Europe. Of such force was this upheaval in the mental life of the European races that even to-day it is still operative. This great intellectual revival, which has been inaptly called the Renaissance, began in Italy, received its fullest development there, and affected life in that country in every important aspect.
