Significant Changes in Public Education in the United States

Katherine E Sullivan, Fordham University

Abstract

Life is the adjustment of the individual to his environment. Education is that process which assists the individual in rendering, reacting, and readjusting in new environment more favorably than he otherwise would, to the forces that are playing upon him. These forces represent the political, industrial, social, religious, and economic conditions of the times. A change in any of these forces, or a change in their conception or interpretation necessarily brings about a change in education. In an ever-changing, ever- growing democracy like the United States, the changes in education have been tremendous and significant, especially within the last fifty or seventy-five years. In a dynamic society, education rust be dynamic. In a democracy the production of efficient citizens in a dynamic society is necessary. The fundamental principle of our democracy is that we provide as nearly free and equal educational opportunities and privileges as is possible. If democracy rests upon an intelligent citizenry, then those capable of learning should attend school.
