The Brethren of the Common Life

Abstract

It was in the Yssel valley that Gerard Groote was born. It was the fortune of this little valley because of its noted citizen Gerard Groote, to have rise within its confines a community of men that were to influence all Western Europe and even spread their teachings to the New World.Gerard Groote was the founder of the Brethren of the Common Life. He was born at Deventer, studied in the parochial schools of his native city, went to Aachen, Cologne, and matriculated at the University of Paris where he obtained the degree of Master of Arts. He was a prominent citizen of Deventer, performing lightly many missions for the town.
