Abstract

In order to obtain a better understanding of this study a brief background of probation is presented. The field of probation is not a new one. Its origin in the United States was in the 1840s when John Augustus, a socially minded Boston shoemaker, became interested in offenders. He secured their release by paying their fines and helped to rehabilitate them. It was not until the 1870s that the first probation law was passed and this was in Massacheusetts.New York State did not recognize any form of probation until 1893 and another twelve years passed before money was allocated by the legislature to provide salaries for probation in cities. In 1908 provision was made for county probation officers.
