Religion, the Coordinating Principle of Education

S.M Jerome, Fordham University

Abstract

All training of the young has for its end the forming of men and women of the future. But, if this is to be done effectively, we must make clear to our- selves the kind of men and women we wish our children to become, for the mind of a child is like the canvas prepared for painting on which can be traced the outlines either of an angel or a devil. Much will depend upon the efforts we make and the manner in which they respond to these efforts for the formation of character. The aim, then, of education should be the formation of character. This term has been defined by Father Hull, S. J., as "life dominated by principles." It is the duty of the educator, therefore, to so guide these principles that they may prove a well spring of moral uprightness, of virtuous thought, word, and action, lasting through life.
