The Drama as a Factor in Education

J. T Perry, Fordham University

Abstract

It is scarcely a matter of surprise that two diametrically opposite answers, to this question may be quoted from playwrights themselves. Mr. J. M. Synge, whose "Riders to the Sea" has given him well-merited notoriety in Ireland, says very emphatically: "We should not go to the theatre as to a chemist's or a dram shop, but as we go to a dinner where the food we need is taken with pleasure and excitement". Many there are who would willingly subscribe to the correctness of this attitude and maintain that the prime purpose of a drama, if not the only one, is to entertain.
