A Preliminary Evaluation of a Program Designed to Improve Early Case Finding Among Ghetto Residents by Extending Clinical Services for the Retarded Into the Community

Abstract

Mental retardation has been defined as sub-average general intellectual functioning associated with impairment in adaptive behavior. The condition is characterized by reduced learning capacity, inadequate social adjustment and a slow rate of maturation. In most cases the condition is manifested at an early age and in some cases at birth. It is believed that the early detection of retardation and the early provision of suitable treatment contributes to improved functioning by retardates. It is hoped that such treatment, if given at an early age, may enable many of them to progress to the point of total self-care or semi- independence. This is a report of a limited evaluation of a new program designed to improve early case finding among ghetto residents by extending clinical services for the retarded into the community.
