Individual Differences
Abstract
One of the greatest benefits that the present day school bas received from the field of educational psychology is a fuller realization of the meaning of individual differences resulting in a more intelligent and effective handling of the individual student. Viewed from the standpoint of the teacher, certain phases of this subject stand out in bold relief, and these will receive our consideration in this paper. We shall stress, in the main, three classes of differences-physical differences, mental differences, and differences in scholastic ability. Owing to the many recent investigations designed to discover the relation, if any, existing between physical growth and mental ability it seems fitting to state, right here, that the nature and results of these investigations have no place in this paper; nor are we trying to arrive at any conclusions concerning the relation between physiological conditions and mental development. Our main purpose is to bring before the educator the realization that the great problem for the school of today is the discovery and development of the capacity of each individual student.
