An Inquiry Into Practical Reading Problems
Abstract
Among the leading educational problems of the present. day is that of the teaching of reading. Reading is of the greatest importance, not only because of the fundamental relation which reading bears to progress in other subjects, but also because of the new light which experimentation has thrown upon the abilities involved in reading. The practice of using diagnostic and remedial tests is especially stimulating. Instead of setting up objectives, as in the past, in terms of high elo-cutionary standards for the middle years, or for then lower grades in terms of the number of primers or first readers read more or less thoroughly, teachers and supervisors may now determine the degree of skill possessed by the pupils under their charge in any or all of the various qualities which make for good reading.
