A Project on Diagnostic Testing and Remedial Teaching in Arithmetic

Arthur Gratz, Fordham University

Abstract

The writer is an Assistant to Principal in a New York City public school and supervises arithmetic work. When this project was undertaken, the school had a register of 1200 boys and 1100 girls, organized into 38 classes ranging from kindergarten to 8B. Every grade is divided into three or four mixed classes of boys and girls, graded in accordance with the mental ability of the children, the brightest pupils in the "one" class, the dullest in the "twa," the second best in "four," and "three" being the intermediate group between the bright "one" and "four" and the dull "two." The classes tested, therefore, supposedly were in the following order of ability: 88, 88, 88, 882.
