The Change in the Content and Teaching Arithmetic During the Last Quarter of a Century
Abstract
The last quarter of a century has seen a great change both in the content and the method of teaching arithmetic in the elementary schools. The aim, which educators have in mind today as the end of education, is the standard by which the content of that subject and the method of teaching it are measured and defined. When we speak of the content of arithmetic we include the topics taught, as addition, percentage, etc., and the "method of teaching" refers to method in a larger sense which, besides the method which refers to taking a certain manner of working out topics in arithmetic like the ratio method, for example, and using it unvaryingly, includes the larger psychological idea of how the child learns.
