Multi-Problem Families: A Comparison of Families Served by the Bronx Casework Referral Unit of the New York City Youth Board in 1957 and 1964
Abstract
The problems social agencies face in trying to help families with social problems are complicated. Many environmental, cultural, and economical aspects of their problems are beyond the scope of our individual authority and competence. Because of these reality problems and the over- whelming social pathology, agencies frequently fail to try to render service where perhaps even a small amount of help can create some needed change. Also, many of these problems marked by gross social pathology have come and left social work agencies untouched, unreached, and unhelped. Since its inception the New York City Youth Board has been charged with the responsibility of reaching and helping those who have been left untouched by other community agencies. These families are known as multi-problem families.
