How Can We Reach the Individual?

Abstract

"The modern trend in social progress and education is individualization." There is a general recognition that individual needs must be met, but, unfortunately, there is no general agreement as to which method is best adapted to meet the requirements. The already over-burdened classroom teacher is confronted with the problem of developing each pupil to his maximum capacity and giving him as much individual attention as possible. This seems almost an impossibility because of the crowded school conditions, but it can be done by every teacher as I shall try to demonstrate. Each teacher, in her own classroom can study the needs of her pupils and provide specific practices and guidance for helping the pupils overcome their difficulties. The aim of this thesis is to show what can be done in the way of individualization under the limitations of the ordinary classroom situations. The viewpoint is that of a seventh grade teacher who found out by actual experience that efficiency and economy in teaching are facilitated by grouping pupils according to their abilities in a certain subject, and by various other devices which are at the disposal of even the busiest teacher.
