The role of Guitmund of Aversa in the developing theology of the Eucharist
Abstract
The thesis of this dissertation is that the Eucharistic theology of Guitmund of Aversa was pivotal in bringing about the definitive end of the Eucharistic crisis of the eleventh century. This dissertation shows that Guitmund's theology not only had an immediate effect on the crisis itself, but from the perspective of the history of Christian doctrine, also had a great impact on the development of Eucharistic theology and theological method. This is proven by tracing the history of the crisis and the pertinent theological issues involved in the eleventh-century theological debate, followed by an English translation of the full text of Guitmund's seminal work, the De corporis et sanguinis Christi veritate in Eucharistia, which has been annotated for sources and supplied with a running historical and theological commentary. Accompanying the translation of the De veritate are two supplemental chapters: one that analyzes his Eucharistic doctrine, and the other his theological method. The conclusion of this study is that Guitmund of Aversa is not only a significant figure in the history and development of Eucharistic doctrine, but also in the development of the scholastic method which became prevalent in the great universities of the thirteenth century.
