The doctrine of the Trinity as a model for fostering an adult church in the Catholic Diocese of Awka in Nigeria
Abstract
This humanistic research explores the central Christian doctrine of the Trinity as a guide for reviewing the apostolate and reshaping the mission of the Church and religious education in the Catholic Diocese of Awka in Nigeria. The study contends: the Christian belief in the Trinity, as a relational and practical doctrine, can serve as a guide for reshaping the pastoral life, relationships, leadership and mission of the Church in the Awka Diocese. This research study proposes the zone, the most basic Christian community in the Awka Diocese, as an adequate context for the implementation of the practical relevance of the doctrine of the Trinity. This qualitative study primarily utilizes the theoretical/theological methodology in raising pertinent questions, critically analyzing the concepts, relationship, and issues involved. This is complemented by the historical methodology which helps to provide a clear perspective of the context of the study. Finally, utilizing educational tools of analysis, it explores the religious educational implications of the doctrine of the Trinity in the curriculum of koinonia, leiturgia and diakonia. It proposes the RCIA as a Trinitarian model of religious education. A mature spirituality for an adult Church is proposed for the Awka Diocese in Nigeria.
