Religious education as resistance in hip-hop form: A liberative pedagogical approach for youth
Abstract
Hip-hop has, arguably represented one of the most significant and socially transformative youth based movements of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Yet, within religious educational literature there has not been a sustained treatment of the socially transformative dimensions of hip-hop in work with youth. This dissertation attends to this gap in literature by utilizing an arts-based methodology to explore hip hop as a liberative pedagogical approach within youth religious education. In particular, the study argues that hip hop is an aesthetic teaching/learning form that can re-envision religious education as a form of resistance that contests social and cultural oppression in the lives of young people.
