Bernard Lonergan’s Philosophy of God

BERNARD JAMES TYRRELL, Fordham University

Abstract

Thinkers do not operate in a vacuum. Hence, as con- temporary hermeneutics indicates, to understand the content of a given thinker's work it is of crucial importance to grasp the context in which the thinker articulates his world- view or understanding of reality. It is the aim of Part I of this work to investigate four principal features which characterize the new context of Lonergan's philosophy of God. These four features are: (1) the "anthropocentric turn"; (2) Lonergan's "Christian" philosophy; (3) the "existential" dimension of Lonergan's approach to the divine and (4) the cultural shift from classicism to historical mindedness.
