THE EFFECTS OF MODELING, REHEARSAL, AND VERBAL CODING STRATEGIES ON FACILITATION AND TRANSFER OF CHILDREN'S COOPERATIVE GAME BEHAVIOR
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of four modeling strategies incorporating rehearsal and verbal instruction on facilitation and transfer of children's cooperative game behavior. Subjects for this investigation consisted of 100 second and third grade boys of middle socio-economic level who were randomly assigned to five experimental treatments. Within each treatment, subjects were randomly assigned to the two-player dyads required for the cooperation measures. Each pair of subjects received one of the five treatments: modeling-alone, modeling-rehearsal, modeling-verbal-instruction, modeling-rehearsal-verbal-instruction, and a no-modeling treatment or control. The same cooperation measure used by the videotaped models was then immediately presented to each pair of subjects in order to measure the levels of facilitation of cooperative behavior exhibited by the dyad. Each pair of subjects was then immediately presented with a novel cooperation task which served as the measure of transfer of cooperative behavior. The Madsen Cooperation Board Game and the Circle Matrix Board are two-player, game-like tasks which served alternatively as measures of facilitation and transfer of cooperative behavior. Hypotheses were tested by a two-way analysis of variance for each of the cooperation measures and by post hoc contrasts. The results indicated that all four modeling strategies produced significantly higher levels of facilitation and transfer of cooperative behavior than the no-modeling strategy or control condition. Moreover, the findings indicated that when modeling is combined with verbal-instruction, significantly higher levels still of facilitation and transfer of cooperative behavior were obtained. However, the results further revealed that rehearsal, in combination with modeling, failed to increase significantly modeling's effectiveness in eliciting cooperative behavior.
