THE IMPACT OF RURAL - URBAN YOUTH MIGRATION ON THEIR ELDERLY MOTHERS IN IMO STATE OF NIGERIA
Abstract
This study focuses on the problems of daily life of rural village women aged 55 years and over in Urualla Town of Ide-ato Local Government Area of Imo State of Nigeria. A population of seventy women was randomly chosen for study 35 "Villagers" and 35 "City-dwellers". The "Villagers" are defined as those elderly women who live with or without their sons and daughters in the village; no sons or daughters in the City. The "City dwellers" are those elderly women who live alone in the village while their sons and daughters live in the City, with no sons or daughters in the village. Elderly women who live with their husbands are not included in the sample for this study. The data from the study were collected by means of a structured interview schedule which included both fixed and open-ended questions covering descriptive information of the elderly woman and her attitudes, satisfaction with life, housing, stress, economics and health. In conclusion, the study found that the City Dwellers were the most vuruerable group that are affected by the migration of their young adult children.
