The impact of advanced old age on the utilization of the formal system of supports
Abstract
The fastest growing segment of the American population is among those people who are aged 75 and over. Age is often used as the sole criterion for service planning yet it is possible that services could be better focused on the basis of other criteria. This study examines the impact of age among an advanced old age group's demand for formal social supports when other variables such as gender, marital status, health, socio-economic status, living arrangements, ethnicity, availability of informal supports, awareness of the availability of formal supports and locus of control are controlled for. The sample was drawn from the membership of the constituent organizations of the Senior Council on Aging in Greenwich, Connecticut.
