Life satisfaction among the institutionalized elderly in India
Abstract
This study was undertaken on a stratified sample of 66 men and 84 women living in six nursing homes in Tamilnadu, India. The data was collected in August-September of 1989 by trained investigators with the help of a schedule. Standard instruments were used to measure the main variables. The main purpose of the study was to explore the associations between the characteristics of the institutionalized elderly and the residences in which they live upon their level of satisfaction. The emphasis of this study was to test seven main hypotheses concerning visits from family and kin-like friends, income, age at admission, religiosity, activities of daily living (ADL), friends in the nursing homes and nursing home characteristics as the predictors of life satisfaction. Various other related sub-hypotheses were also tested.
