Abstract

This research intends to comprehensively evaluate Slated as a new independent film financing option. In the context of a changing film industry, understanding how this new model of financing can help filmmakers access capital outside of the major film studio system can aid filmmakers in deciding between different forms of financing. The research centers around what factors lead to more success raising capital on Slated along with how a movie being financed on Slated affects its critic and audience reception. The analysis extends into a comparison of Slated films and studio films around the difference in critic and audience reception. The dataset of Slated films and studio films is compiled from sources including Slated, Rotten Tomatoes, and IMDb. Findings of this research highlight the importance of a Slated film’s cast and crew on the final amount raised and introduce an interesting relationship between that amount raised and the critic reception of the film. Comparison with studio films shows an entirely different relationship with amount raised and reception, specifically on the audience side, creating a complex choice between financing on Slated or through a studio for filmmakers weighing the importance of critic and audience reception. Slated ultimately emerges as an option that is better for experienced independent filmmakers rather than new filmmakers, falling short of fully closing the gap in accessibility to independent financing.
