Abstract
The 2008 housing crash, which erased $2 trillion in American home values, prompted significant regulatory responses, notably the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010. This research assesses Dodd-Frank’s effectiveness in preventing future crises and its impact on financial institutions and consumers. While the Act enhanced financial stability and transparency, it also increased compliance costs, potentially limiting small bank competitiveness. Furthermore, the study explores the mixed effects of Universal Rating Symbols in the Credit Rating Agency market, illustrating the complexity of financial reforms. Overall, while Dodd-Frank has achieved several objectives, its broader efficacy and unintended consequences reveal that its true impact may only be fully understood in the face of another financial crisis.
