Abstract

Engaging multiple perspectives and local histories, this paper seeks to examine the presence of multinational oil corporations in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. This study investigates the consequences of the oil industry’s corporatism in Nigeria beyond politics and economics by evaluating community perspectives on indigenous language, traditional industries, popular music, spirituality, and other aspects of life. Due to a lack of corporate engagement with the epistemology, ethno-racial differences, and grassroots economies of the region, this study concludes that oil extracting corporations have fallen short of decolonial economic options. Thus, multinational oil corporations in the Niger Delta perpetuate the nation’s colonial history and approach irreparable harm to the Niger Delta communities. Pointing towards the decolonial option, my research ultimately suggests how companies can act in ways that are increasingly delinked from colonialism and acknowledge the entanglement of local community circumstances.
