Abstract

The purpose of this quantitative study is to determine the degree of difference and importance of leadership characteristics as perceived by Generation Y as compared to Baby Boomer and Generation X cohort followers in finance-related U.S. based organizations as measured by Lee Volker Cox’s Multigenerational Leadership Characteristics Questionnaire. Ultimately, I hope conclusions can be drawn on the motivations behind Millennial leadership preferences by use of a factor analysis and extensive literature review of the psycho-development of Millennials. The questions asked are: What leadership qualities are most preferred by the Baby Boom Generation, GenX, and GenY in U.S. financial institutions? What differences exist between generational preferences in leadership qualities amongst the Baby Boom Generation, GenX, and GenY? What effects has helicopter parenting had on the Millennial follower? What possible effects has helicopter parenting had on Millennials’ preferences of leaders? What effect do certain leadership qualities have on employees’ self-confidence? Do Millennials prefer leadership qualities that impact employee self-confidence more so than other generations?
