Department Chair: Dr. Javier Jiménez Belmonte
Its faculty of 21 tenured and tenure-track members specialize in and teach upper-level courses in French, German, Italian, and Spanish
medieval, early modern, modern and postmodern literatures and
cultures; Latin American and Francophone colonial and postcolonial
literatures and cultures; and contemporary Latino writing and film.
Through its majors and minors in language studies, the department
promotes the interdisciplinary study of language by encouraging
students to take courses in related fields. It also provides students
with the opportunity to connect with New York City's multilingual
communities through service learning courses.
The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures prepares students for graduate and professional work and for study abroad. Its study abroad programs, such as Fordham's Spring Semester in Granada and Summer Study in Paris and Rome, extensive tutoring services, and lectures, film series, and cultural events, seek to immerse students in the languages and cultures they study, foster their participation in international networks and events, and engage them in a dialogue across languages and cultures.
