Professor David Canter, UK

David, having been impressed with the Guttman scale whilst an undergraduate in the 1960’s, met Louis Guttman when they were both in Tokyo in 1970. The meeting changed David’s intellectual life and he consequently pursued Facet Theory and its implications ever after. He has published dozens of studies drawing on what he prefers to call The Facet Approach as well as editing a crucial book on Facet Theory in 1985. He has given keynote addresses at many Facet Theory conferences, and other international gathering, as well as introducing hundreds of students to the approach for their thesis work.

He is now Professor of Psychology at The University of Huddersfield, where he directs the International Research Centre for Investigative Psychology, having moved there from a similar post at The University of Liverpool in 2009, where he is now an Emeritus Professor. He is an Honorary Fellow of the British Psychological Society and the South African Psychological Association, a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and the Royal Society of Medicine, as well as being a Chartered Forensic Psychologist and member of the Forensic Science Society.

Over the past 25 years he has been involved as a consultant to over a hundred police investigations and has given evidence in court and to government inquiries concerning a variety of aspects of human behaviour in criminal and threatening circumstances.
