Abstract
This study uses data from FINRA’s 2021 National Financial Capability Study to compare financial literacy with long-term financial behaviors; and compare financial literacy by gender and income. Questions from the study were used to create scores in both financial literacy and financial behaviors. We emphasize the importance of financial literacy as those who scored higher on the financial literacy quiz were shown to have superior financial behaviors. We also found significant differences in financial literacy scores with women and low-income individuals scoring lower than men. This study highlights the need to encourage girls and women and improve education in personal finance, especially in low-income communities.
