Abstract

This study examines the multifaceted impacts of loneliness on workplace dynamics, particularly within youth populations in the Gen-Z and millennial cohorts. Amidst the rising prevalence of loneliness, often compared to the severity of smoking 15 cigarettes a day, this research focuses on how loneliness affects aspects of work life such as performance, group commitment, locus of control, and fear of appearing incompetent. Utilizing correlational and regression analyses through SPSS, findings indicate that while loneliness does not significantly correlate with overall performance, it negatively influences group commitment and intrinsic locus of control, and positively affects extrinsic locus of control and fear of appearing incompetent. These insights highlight the importance of addressing loneliness within organizational structures to enhance team functionality and individual well-being. This study contributes to the scant literature on loneliness in business journals, suggesting that management teams should integrate strategies to mitigate workplace loneliness and foster a supportive work environment.
