Abstract
It has become evident in recent years that having access to financial services is essential for participation in all aspects of life be it economic, social, or cultural. Everyone should have the capacity to choose and pursue their conception of a worthwhile life as defined by financial freedom. A bank account, the most basic financial instrument, offers a series of features and benefits that can be customized to fit a consumer’s individual banking needs and can help achieve the aforementioned personal financial goals. This paper explores the human need for a bank account as well as its status as a human right. Following empirical evidence, Griffin’s theory of autonomy and personhood, and Kant’s teachings on human dignity, the framework for which there is a moral right to a bank account is established.
