Abstract
This paper assesses the rationale and viability of public and private investment in European football clubs. To determine whether these investments have been profitable, I have collected financial data on clubs’ share prices and valuations in order to compare returns to those of the overall market. From there, I have determined investor sentiment by assessing the language used in media publications and compared motivations for investment to the characteristics of the sports fan.
