Abstract prepared by Justina Brandt, Elizabeth Shannon, and Babagbolaga Sogbetun This interview portrays a vivid and direct glimpse into the life and career of Lujira Cooper, emphasizing her creativity and resilience. She recalls growing up in Rockaway Beach, New York and her relationship with her mother and father. As a writer, Lujira frequently connects her real life experiences to the characters and themes in her stories. Her time at the 34th Street YMCA, described as a "gay haven," reflects an environment where her LGBTQ+ identity was less a source of conflict than her outspoken nature as a Black woman. In 2016, Lujira went back to school and received her BA in English and Criminal Justice. This education propelled her writing journey; she has written a book called Theft of Trust and is currently working on a science fiction fantasy. Lujira refers to the latter multiple times in a discussion of family relationships, empathy, and love.
