Abstract
Abstract prepared by Rory Donahue and Frances Schnepff Elaine Livingston, a native New Yorker hailing from Harlem, born on March 3rd, 1949, remains in Harlem to this day. The conversation covers many subjects, unveiling Livingston's complex and vast personal history with the help of her personal photo archives. The conversations look at five different photos provided by Livingston and unpack their history, meaning, and value to Livingston. Topics such as coming out as LGBTQ+ in the 1970s after marrying a straight man and having three children, living through the AIDS epidemic in New York, and her experience working with children through her daycare program and now with her nine Grandchildren are covered throughout the interview. Livingston ran and owned her own daycare program out of her apartment, then became one of the founders of SAGE Harlem Center and is now the president of her NYCHA housing development on 117th Street. Livingston is still a part of SAGE Harlem and places lots of value on the communities she resides in, whether her SAGE community, friends, and most importantly family.
