Abstract

Abstract prepared by Anna Faust and Brett Cetnar-Garrett Our interview with Alan Stenzler explores both his personal and professional journey navigating the world as a gay man. Alan brings forth nuanced and wise viewpoints on identity, his community and his view on life in New York City. Alan tells us about his career path, not always easy, and how he ended up with a lifetime career in civil service work. But Alan also has countless interests and hobbies outside of his work life. Alan shares his love for architecture, classical music, and classical literature. All of these interests have helped make Alan into the person we talked with today. Alan reflects upon his coming out experience, only shortly before the AIDs epidemic. Alan says he was not a party person, but had his fun until he had a more serious relationship. Now, Alan is single and says he doesn’t seek that kind of attachment again. Alan prizes the connections that SAGE and the LGBTQ+ community have brought into his life and says that these connections are one of the biggest positive sides to his identity. Alan shares his critical views on the current political landscape as well as some frustrations with the New York City subway system. The interview shows a nuanced and wise individual who incorporates humor and wit into his conversation.
